     About Us

Hippoworks.com is a company owned by cartoonist Denis Thomopoulos and two friends he's had since the 2nd and 4th grade. Aside from making people laugh, It's A Jungle Out There! and its characters help educate people about the environment and treatment of animals. We are content providers for AOL, the educational network Lightspan.com, Care2.com, KidsRegen, Earth Day Education, among others. The weekly cartoonlets are a free offering, for subscribers or for your web site!

We make every effort to "walk the talk" and create products that are as environmentally responsible as possible, -so our shirts are made with organic cotton, books with kenaf/recycled paper, and other items, like our popular Lip Balm, from all natural ingredients. We've also teamed up with Wildlife Works, which owns an 80,000 acre African animal sanctuary, so when you buy something from our webstore, proceeds go to help real animals in Africa!

For wholesale inquiries, please visit our wholesale page or if you are interested in print versions of the cartoonlets and carrying them in your newspaper, please visit the strip.

Why are we concerned?

Because the choices we have been making, as a world community, are damaging the environment and animals at an alarming rate.

Some individuals and websites that have inspired us are janegoodall.org, nrdc.org, nwf.org, and wwf.org. We hope they inspire you too.

Why organic cotton?

Because producing a regular cotton tee shirt uses 1/3 of a pound of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which are toxic to humans as well as to animals such as birds, bees, and fish.

Why Kenaf/ Recycled Paper?

Because we wanted to use the most environmentally positive paper possible. It mixes what we have, recycled (30% post-consumer content), with a fiber for our future, kenaf, an African plant that is a more sustainable and efficient crop for paper than trees. Not only does it use less energy to be made into paper, kenaf can be harvested annually as it grows up to fifteen feet in just five months!

We print on this kenaf/recycled paper with uncoated soy inks, keeping the vibrant colors of hippo works characters with a completely natural product and look.
The Hippo Works Mission is..

to serve our customers with characters and products that are innovative, entertaining, and educational.

to respect our customers, business partners, and planet Earth.

to succeed as a business while maintaining our pro-social and eco friendly values.

to make the world a better place and to inspire others to do the same.
